Message from Joanne M. Mahoney - County Executive, Onondaga County:
Onondaga County has actively managed the consumption of energy in County facilities for many years now. This effort has saved the County taxpayers millions of dollars, reducing the County's exposure to the volatility of energy cost, and lowered our impacts on the environment. With your participation, Onondaga County can expand our efforts to improve the sustainability of all the communities in Onondaga County.
The County established an Energy Initiative and Action Plan in 1996. Since then the County has steadfastly worked to reduce energy usage and cost of County operations. In 2003 the County embarked on a major energy performance contract seeking energy savings opportunities at its 25 largest energy consuming facilities. As a result, the County implemented approximately $18 million of energy savings measures saving approximately $2 million per year in energy costs. Today, the County is continuing to aggressively pursue additional energy savings in its operations. The County is currently using its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant and other New York State Grants and utility incentives to further reduce its energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
The "Renew Onondaga County" initiative is designed to assist homeowners, businesses and organizations in Onondaga County in taking similar actions to reduce their energy consumption to save money and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The “Renew Onondaga County” Initiative provides a resource to explore Federal, State and Local grants and incentives available to perform energy upgrades in your home, business and community. On these pages, you’ll find useful tips to help lower your energy use and utility costs. Additionally, the County will also be highlighting innovative conservation and renewable projects around the County to serve as examples.
